For the past 13 years, Jennifer Cullenbine (a.k.a. Queen Elf) and her family, have headed up a non-profit organization called The Family Giving Tree program. This gifting program has added to the holiday season's joy by contributing thousands of presents to disadvantaged kids, families, and the homeless. For the past 13 years SS/L Elves have made 'magic' happen. We want to do it again, and we need your help. Read below and please consider being an Elf this year.

A Giving Heart

by Joan Williams

“Did you hear what they're saying?”,  Benjamin Elf did exclaim.
“Family Giving Tree time is near and they're taking down names,
of those who profess to have “giving hearts”, you see?”
(“Giving Hearts” are full of wonder and generosity.)

No special talent is needed…you don't have to sing
But a requirement, I'm sure, is the joy that you bring
…to the children in need with no hope to see,
…to the families wondering what to put under the tree,
…to the homeless who are trying their best to survive,
…to the Cullenbines, you help them keep Love alive.
What better way to express how you feel?

Some ideas we have heard mentioned ...

  1. "We don't put up a Holiday Tree, so we like to hang our gift cards on Holiday Wreaths and garland we string around the office."
  2. "We hang our gift cards around our cubicles, using ribbon."
  3. "We put a sampling of our gift cards into a spreadsheet and post it on our intranet. This way, people get an idea of what the cards are all about and are more likely to walk the distance to the lobby and pick up a card or two!"

We have two things planned:

1. A silent auction (combined with a pot luck). Last year one department held an open house for a full day. They had lots of goodies to eat and several tables worth of donated and home made items to sell. Each item had a sign up sheet in front of it with a starting price. The highest bidder at the end of the day got the item. It was fun to have a bidding war too, as I was involved in one and won out. Actually on two items. There were all kinds of things, from books/puzzles/calendars to a tea pot, kitchen items...all kinds of things. This year we're doing it company wide. Each floor/department will host a specific type of food, and have their own tables of goods for sale. Haven't worked out the details yet but all proceeds will go for gift tags from the tree. Last year was the first time the sale had been promoted outside that one department, and it was a huge success.

2. Book Fair. For the past few years we've had a book vendor come on site for two days (this year we're cutting it back to just one). He sells all kinds of books and gift items. This year's fair is the end of this month, and we get back 10% of the profits he takes in. As last year, that 10% will go towards gift tags. The year before the vendor donated a scooter, which at that time was a very popular item. Last year he donated a few books. That is in addition to the 10%, so he's very supportive.

If you have any ideas or suggestions to share with your fellow Hosts, please email them to Info@FamilyGivingTree.org. We will gladly post them to this website.  Thank you!
