YOU can make a difference...Volunteer

We are deeply grateful for the more than 8,000 volunteers who give of their time to work hand-in-hand with the Family Giving Tree.

Interested in volunteering during the Family Giving Tree's Back-to-School and/or Holiday Wish Drives?  We’re always looking for people who want to have fun, are passionate about our work and love giving back to their community.  You can also support our mission year-round by volunteering in our office, interviewing our recipient agencies or representing the Family Giving Tree at volunteer fairs.

Warehouse Positions

The warehouse is a flurry of activity in August for the Back-to-School Drive and in December for the Holiday Wish Drive. We rely on groups and individual volunteers to help us set up the warehouse space, receive donations, sort and prepare donations, quality check donated products, help load agency cars, and clean up the warehouse space. Tasks will be assigned when volunteers arrive at the warehouse dependent upon most pressing needs at that time. Registration happens on a first come first serve basis.

Outreach and Donor Relations

Agency Interviews

From schools to after-school programs and family shelters, The Family Giving Tree provides much-needed school supplies and gifts to a wide variety of organizations throughout the Bay Area. Help us evaluate our recipient organization and their needs by conducting agency interviews. This is a great way to learn about the wonderful work being done by local non-profits and help the Family Giving Tree continue to improve our services. This is a great opportunity for volunteers with a passion for non-profit work and meeting new people.

Drive Leader Calls

Without dedicated Drive Leaders, the Family Giving Tree would not have the capability of donating thousands of backpacks and wishes each year to local partner agencies. Drive Leaders have to be contacted at the beginning of each Drive season, and registered with their updated information. We need volunteers who enjoy interacting over the phone and are willing to recruit new Drive Leaders from their own social circles. The more Drive Leaders who are registered, the more supplies and gifts given to children in need!

  • Restrictions: 18+ years old
  • Times Offered: April-July & September-November
  • Requirements: Attend orientation, 20 phone calls per month

Family Giving Tree Ambassador

Think about the amount of times you tell your friends and coworkers about your favorite sushi restaurant, the latest park you went to with the beautiful sunset, or your prized football team. We are constantly advocating for things that we love. Why not help Family Giving Tree do the same? Attend volunteer fairs, service days, public presentations and more where you can talk about the organization you have fallen in love with.

  • Restrictions: 18+ years old, 3+ months commitment
  • Times Offered: As needed basis
  • Requirements: Attend orientation
  • Location: Throughout the Bay Area

IT Opportunities

Wish Database Cleanup/Entry

The Family Giving Tree has close to 4,000 different gifts that agencies can choose from for the individuals they help. We have to keep the content up-to-date and are constantly revamping the system itself. What does each gift look like? What keywords will be most beneficial for agencies when they are entering the information? Has the gift gone up in price over the years? If you are technologically savvy and are looking for a cause to invest in, this is your one stop shop.

  • Restrictions: 18+ years old, 3+ months commitment
  • Times Offered: Year-Round
  • Requirements: Attend orientation
  • Location: Family Giving Tree Office (606 Valley Way, Milpitas), Work from home

In the Spotlight

home spotlight2

Family Giving Tree would like to recognize the Angel Elves who helped at the Holiday Wish Drive!

Year after year, thousands of passionate individuals volunteer at the Holiday Wish Drive sorting and organizing donations throughout the month of December. Then, there are the dedicated few who volunteer for hours on end in the warehouse (typically 20+ hours), assisting staff members with special tasks, potentially even directing volunteers by themselves on certain projects. These long time volunteers are deeply involved with Family Giving Tree, volunteering their time throughout the year in whatever ways they see fit. Most are also heavily committed with other local non-profits as well. Thank you dearly for all the work you have done over the past several months as your special skills and talents made this drive a success!

Special Thanks to: Nana, Tia, Karen Lenowski, Holly Knapp, Shelene Huey-Booker, Joanne Bodenhammer, Kathy DiFrancesco, Diane Trevino, Danielle Trevino, Nancy Raia, Diane Harney, Dave Huber, Kelly Dougherty, Emily Fowler, Dan Fowler, Sonja Thieme, Todd Yoshida, Sylvia Beatty, and Jessica Hill.
