Every year on January 24, the world recognizes International Day of Education—a day dedicated to celebrating the power of learning to transform lives, strengthen societies, and build more peaceful, equitable futures. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, this observance invites communities, organizations, and individuals to reflect on how education shapes our world and why access to quality education remains a key global challenge.

Education: A Human Right and a Global Priority

Education is more than a classroom experience—it’s a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) specifically calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

But even with progress in many regions, millions of children and young people remain without access to schooling. According to the latest UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring reports, over 250 million children and youth worldwide are still out of school—a figure that has only seen marginal improvement over the last decade. This isn’t just a number; it represents real children and families missing out on opportunities for growth, confidence, and future economic security.

Education's Far-Reaching Impact

Why does this matter so much? Because education isn't just about reading books or passing tests; it’s about building a foundation for long-term well-being. When children are in school, they have a better chance at:

  • Healthier lives, through improved knowledge and access to resources

  • Higher earning potential and economic stability

  • Greater gender equality, as girls’ education correlates strongly with family and community health

  • Stronger civic participation, meaning communities that are more informed and engaged

Despite these truths, disparities persist. In low-income countries, about one-third of school-age children are not enrolled in school—compared to just a fraction in wealthier nations.

What International Day of Education Means for Us

When we celebrate International Day of Education, we do more than acknowledge progress; we renew our commitment to equity and inclusion. It’s a reminder that education systems must evolve, that barriers must be dismantled, and that every learner—no matter their background—deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Here at Family Giving Tree, education isn’t just a sustainable development goal; it’s a mission lived every day. Whether we’re supplying backpacks filled with school essentials, supporting classroom readiness, or helping kids start the year with confidence, we know that access to the right tools can make all the difference.
